Auroras and Closed Borders

  • 14-16/03/21

Amy and I took a long weekend and were rewarded by a fantastic aurora display over our tent and the mountains of Sylan on our first night, and a lesser display on night two.

The map above, from Norgeskart is blank across the border to Sweden, which felt very apt "here be dragons" style as all land over that line was strictly off limits, with the border closed due to CoVid.  We skied the route clockwise, with the night where you can see a slight break of the line south of Nesjøen.  The going on day one was fairly good, but hard packed wind blown snow did slow progress at times - but we had glorious views and a most spectacular campsite - which just got better when the aurora came out to dance!

The next day we took a recce off towards Nedalshytta which offered a very different feel of narrow valleys and some trees, in contrast to the open hillsides of the rest of the route.  We then skied along the border - careful never to stray over the forbidden line, but once camp was pitched a few 100 m from a border marker, I could not help but ski over to, and climb onto (but not over) the stone and concrete border marker.

By the end of the second day it had clouded over, and this continued for the final day of skiing, so gone were the spectacular views of the first two days, but the ski back to the car was very pleasant, and got us back to Trondheim in time to enjoy the first live music gig for a long time.
