Bymarka Ski Camping

It was a stunning weekend in Bymarka, often looking down on Trondheim and the fjord coated in mist. Where we camped, near Bosbergheia, there was barely a breath of wind and stunning views. Our route choice on Sunday was on the adventurous side at times, but we were rewarded by some quite spectacular landscapes..
The route we picked from Storheia and round Bergskardet was facetiously described as "innovative". There were certainly more ski-able tracks, and we often found ourselves in terrain more suited to snow-shoes than skis - and I was very glad that I left the pulk at home and packed in a backpack - even when the weight of it put me off balance from time to time. Despite the challenges it was a very nice weekend, with the mercury dropping very low, and with some spectacular snow, clouds and lighting. I also got to practice telemark turning (once I'd put my backpack to one side!) after a course the previous week. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it actually went better in the loose snow than on the ski slope at Vassfjellet. The low gradient and resistance from powder snow slowed things down enough for me to make sure to get into the right positions and it was very satisfying to manage a few nice swings (no slopes were big enough to try many linked turns). Lots more practice still needed though!!
