A week in the Faroe Islands

  • 30/12/19 - 06/01/20

On our way back from Christmas in Scotland to Norway, we made a week-long stop-over in the Faroe Islands.  We stayed in a flat just outside Torshavn, and had a fantastic week hiking and sightseeing.

Wild winds, stunning scenery and ferocious fireworks!

In the Faroes it is near impossible to go anywhere without a breath-taking 360' view (except in the sub-sea car tunnels...), and visiting in the winter off-season comes highly recommended.  We hired a car, which we picked up just outside the airport, and a flat from booking.com just outside Torshavn.  There were very few other tourists on the island to experience the 60mph winds, war-zone-like New-Year fireworks (in 50 mph winds), and the spectacular nature, which we got to see with a sprinkling of snow.

As we were travelling back from Scotland to Trondheim, we even managed the trip without any "extra" flights, as we were able to fly direct from Edinburgh to Torshavn, then from Torshavn to Bergen the next week (and took the train the rest of the way home to Trondheim).  It is certainly a place we hope to return to - in any season.  Kayaking there must be fantastic - but absolutely not in the sea/wind conditions that we saw on this trip!!
