On thick ice

My first time on "Turskøyter" - long distance ice skates

Through TTF (Trondhjems Turistforening Fjellsportgruppa) I got a chance to try out long distance ice skates. I was amazed how little friction there was, despite the 2 cm of snow on the lake. People had been out before us to check the ice, and we were assured that there was no chance of an unexpected bath on the entire lake, except by the very obvious outlet at the damn. That meant I could focus on trying to work out skating - which was going pretty well by the end of the 2 hour session.

Despite how safe the ice was, we were all prepared for going through.

We all had:

  • Ice spikes to pull ourselves out

  • A full change of clothes in dry bags

  • Inflated drybags in our backpacks to act as floats

  • A strap between out legs to hold the pack down so it could act as a float

And most had an "ice pole" for support and checking the thickness of the ice.

It was a fun evening - certainly something I want to try again!
