Kjølhaugen Rundt
-
19-20/02/22
Two days of skiing in mixed conditions around Kjølhaugen, starting at Ferslia (DNT hytte).
I had a good friend from Scotland coming to visit, and lots of fresh snow to enjoy. Last time he visited I took him for his first shot at cross country skiing in tracks, but this time we wanted to go further, and do some back country ski camping. I took my wider Falkatind skis and both our kit in the pulk, and lent him my normal Amundsen BC skis.
We started off on Saturday morning with great sunny weather as we skied through the woods, but as the day drew on the clouds thickened and descended. We skied until just after dark, with the wind picking up throughout the afternoon, and a long, dark evening melting snow and prepping food was a great chance to catch up, having not seen each other for two years.
On Sunday we awoke to nice views into Sweden, but we had barely started skiing when the clouds descended further, and we were into whiteout conditions. This was nothing new to me, but very disorientating for my friend in it for the first time - though he was taking the adventure in good spirits, happy to follow in my tracks. By lunchtime the clouds had started to lift, and passing over the shoulder between Blågerga and Kjølhaugan we were rewarded by spectacular views, and more nice powdery snow. During our final climb to a viewpoint on the south western flakns of Kjølhaugan we were rewarded with a stunning sunset before a fun whizz down through the forrest and back to the car.
