On thin ice

TTF trip ice skating trip on Jonsvatnet, my second time on "turskøyter"

Trondhjems Turistforenings Fjellsportgruppa organised a trip to skate on the thin ice of Jonsvatnet.  I borrowed "turskøyter"/"långfärdsskridskor" (long distance ice skates, that attach to BC ski bindings, so free at the heal) and headed out for my second time on the ice.  This time we had to be continuously aware of the varying ice conditions, as most of the lake was still open.  Last week I attended a lecture on ice skating safety, which was put to good use.  In many places the ice was too think to penetrate with the "ice pole", but much of the time, two hard hits would get to the water, and we were skating for a while on ice that was only one hard hit thick (about 4-5 cm). Towards the edge, beyond where anyone skated, a simple tap on the ice was enough to get through.

We all enjoyed an evening exploring the ice-covered area of the lake, with everyone staying safely on top of the ice.
